RRiz Maslen—widely celebrated under her moniker Neotropic—has carved out an extraordinary trajectory across experimental electronic music, sound art, and multimedia production.
Originally moving to London from the West Country (where she fronted several indie bands), Maslen quickly became a fixture of the capital’s electronic underground. Her early involvement with The Future Sound of London and The Beloved coincided with the dawn of acid house, paving the way for her loan-funded leap into production. As Neotropic, she pioneered a distinct space within post-techno electronics, releasing acclaimed work on legendary independent labels including R&S/Apollo, Oxygen Music Works, and Ninja Tune.
Beyond traditional releases, Maslen’s aesthetic bridges the organic and the electronic, seamlessly weaving elements of jazz, folk, psychedelia, and post-rock with field recordings and found sounds. This sonic palette has naturally expanded into immersive audio-visual works, including installations for Kew Gardens and the Southbank Centre, and her self-directed road-movie film La Prochaine Fois (2001), which screened at the Sundance Film Festival.
A compelling live act known for her raw honesty and intense stage presence, Maslen has performed internationally at major events like Coachella and the Montreux Jazz Festival. Now based in St Leonards-on-Sea, she continues to push creative boundaries across multiple projects—releasing music and performing as a member of the electronic-krautrock outfit Aircooled, forming the improvisation supergroup Non Blank alongside Oliver Cherer, Jack Hayter, and Darren Morris, collaborating widely across the festival circuit, and completing her sixth Neotropic studio album.
